Personality

Cold and sharp, Severus Snape seems to the world to be the very characterization of ice. He is short and blunt with his words, preferring to state directly his intentions rather than alluding to them. His voice is perhaps intentionally soft and chilly, and he is endowed with the natural talent of terrifying his subordinates--and often his equals. He is shrewd and calculating, possessing a brilliant mind and an unforgiving demeanor. His misanthropy is likely a direct result of his tumulted and possibly abusive childhood family life.

History

Born January 9, 1959 (or 1960) to a Muggle, Tobias Snape, and a witch, Eileen Prince, Severus Snape had a rough childhood. In the books we get the sense that he may have been physically abused by his father. He also endured being a witness to his parents' unstable and often violent relationship. In book four, Sirius says "Snape knew more curses when he arrived at school than half the kids in the seventh year and he was part of a gang of Slytherins who nearly all turned out to be Death Eaters." He was a loner during his school years, called "Snivellus" by his classmates and routinely ridiculed by the Marauders (although it is noteworthy that he likely cursed them more than once, as well.) At age seventeen, he is lured into the Whomping Willow by Sirius Black and was nearly killed by the werewolf form of Remus Lupin (he was saved at the last minute by James Potter, and seems to hold a long-standing grudge against both James and his son Harry because of this.) It was no surprise to those who knew him when Severus left Hogwarts to join the forces of Lord Voldemort. In 1980 he eavesdrops on Dumbledore's interview of Sybill Trelawney and hears the Prophecy, which he immediately relays to the Dark Lord. It is unknown exactly when he became a double-agent--it may have been at the same time that he joined the Death Eaters. However, in my opinion, he did not become a spy until after he overheard the Prophecy. The next year, five years after he himself left Hogwarts, he is hired to teach Potions (his request to teach DADA was denied.) After the death of the adult Potters, he is accused by Karkaroff of being a Death Eater, but Dumbledore vouches for him. Snape saves Harry's life in Harry's first year at Hogwarts. In Harry's third year, Snape is face-to-face once more with the former Marauders. He seems to be attempting to save Harry's life in the Shrieking Shack by "protecting" him from Sirius Black. He nearly receives the Order of Merlin for this deed, but the prize is retracted when Sirius escapes. In Harry's fifth year, Snape teaches him Occlumency but quits the lessons after Harry witnesses his "worst memory" in the Penseive. He pretends to be on Umbridge's side, but manages to avoid giving Harry Veritaserum on her orders and is thus put on probation. Once more, he saves Harry's life by letting the Order of the Phoenix know that Harry and the others had gone to the Dept of Mysteries. In the summer before Harry's sixth year, we discover that he has been living in an apartment in Spinner's End with Wormtail. He makes the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa that he will kill Dumbledore should Draco fail to do so, and also to watch over Draco and protect him with his life. He does this against Bellatrix's wishes, and swears to both women that he is indeed an agent of Voldemort. In the sixth year, Snape is hired as DADA teacher. In his very first class, he breaks the rules by attempting to jinx Harry. He is overheard around Christmas conversing with Draco, trying to get the boy to let him help kill Dumbledore. At the end of the school year, Snape murders Professor Dumbledore when Draco is unable to do so. In my opinion, he did so because of the Unbreakable Vow he made to Narcissa, but also because of a promise he made to Dumbledore. When A.D. says "Severus, please...." he is really reminding Snape of their promise. After this point, we do not hear from him again.

Physical Appearance

Sallow, amber-toned skin with greasy, shoulder-length black hair and pitiless ebony eyes; 6'1", fairly slender with very defined cheekbones and jawline; large, hooked nose and thin, tight-pressed lips. He seems quite unattractive at first, but should one choose to look closer, they may notice the slender grace of his long fingers and the elegant curve of the jugular vein snaking down his neck.
